Smokers Relight Deux (WAV, REX, Reason Refills) Review

Smokers Relight Deux (WAV, REX, Reason Refills)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first Smokers collection quickly became a user-standard, filling every inch of its product with usable, well-crafted loops and loads of deconstructed hits. All of the hype for Smokers 1 was for good reason.
No surprise that this sequel gets the same media treatment, much of it deserved. But a closer look at the collection exposes a slight flaw that keeps it from a 5-star rating: the beats are too much alike over too much of the disc. Sure, the drum SOUNDS are different, but the beats from folder to folder are mostly cut from the "Keep On Movin'"/Lisa Stansfield cloth. I'd have liked more variety in the rhythms themselves, more backbeats, more play. Some people would call this kind of one-beat regimen "working within the genre." Sure...if the genre is two songs deep.
That said, they compensate a great deal by offering "dropped" variations of the main beat (notice the singular) and more one shots than you can shake your hard drive at. if you like building your beats, this collection gives you some great fodder. It's a worthy addenudum to the original collection, if not quite the classic stand-alone that the previous incarnation was.
A final note: it's horrendously overpriced considering these flaws.

M-Audio Key Rig Virtual Instrument Review

M-Audio Key Rig Virtual Instrument

I was skeptical about this software because of its price. I checked a lot of reviews and they all said the same thing: "It's worth a lot more than you will pay for it." I would definitely agree. I bought this software right before I had to go play for a week straight. As soon as I checked it, everyone was amazed about how it sounded! The piano's and rhodes and wurli's all sound top notch! My drummer, who has been playing piano for as long as drums, said if he turned his eyes away he would swear that I was playing a grand piano. The synth is also really good sounding and amazingly simple to use - its really easy to get the sound you want out of it. The B3 module is a gem! My friend owns native instrument's B4 software and that program is amazing, but this B3 module is right up with it. The sound is very pleasing to the ears....I would say any fan of B4 will love this module. Finally, the midi module is simple and sounds good. I didn't use it much because I was mostly doing pads, organ, or piano/wurli/rhodes. Overall this software is top notch, but with one complaint: the piano module isn't as loud as the other ones. This isn't a huge problem but can be annoying at times. I give it a 4 four that, but besides that it is an amazing software sound-wise and ease of use.

Casio LK300TV 61 Key Lighted Keyboard w/USB and TV Outputs Review

Casio LK300TV 61 Key Lighted Keyboard w/USB and TV Outputs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My 7-years old boy started his piano classes in Jan 2007, so I bought Casio LK-300TV for him from Sears. Few months later I bought the same keyboard for my mom from E-Bay (they were not available in local stores anymore). It was such so happy choice, we all LOVE it.
Pros:
- Sounds pretty good to my ears. It's not intended for professionals, but good enough for amateurs.
- Number of built-in rhythms and tones are out of imagination. We use only few, though. :)
- TV-Out lessons. You don't really need to know notes in order to play music, it shows on a screen which keys to press with which fingers.
- Lighted keys are useful to learn, especially w/o TV
- Karaoke is just great! Internet has bunch of karaoke files in KAR format. I did some research, them purchased Karcasio program, that allows to convert KAR-files into SMF format, used by Casio, copied them onto SD-card, inserted card into piano - and voila !
- Traning programs (Step 1-3) are also useful, when you learn certain plays
- Scoring. My son loves to score, it's fun for him. He doesn't stop until he gets 100 :)
Cons:
- Not enough keys for some piano plays, I wish Casio had 72- and 88-keys models with the same set of features.
- Piano lessons are available for built-in melodies only. I wish Casio sells additional piano banks, not leaving owners with built-in only.
- Really boring fact is that karaoke mode cannot automatically switch to the next or random song out of the list, it always repeats the same one, until you switch it manually. It's REALLY BORING, believe me ! :(
- When showing up next set of karaoke words on TV-screen, they should've been switched a bit earlier, than rhythm is. You need to know in advance what to sing. If you don't know words of partucular song, pretty frequently you end up with "out-of-sync" singing, because of it.

Yamaha LW16 Stand for DGX200 Series and DGX300 Series Portable Grand Keyboards Review

The stand is very secure and holds the piano at the correct height. Should be paired with the matching bench. The only issue that I have is that it comes only in a blond oak finish. Would be better if there were other choices.

Interactive Keyboard Review

Interactive Keyboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After searching for some time for a good piano tutorial software I ended up at Best Buy and, almost by accident, came across Interactive Keyboard written by Laurie Arthur. As a disclaimer, I am in no way tied to the promoter or the promotion of this product. My previous exposure to piano was limited to a group piano course at a junior college and some self-training, specifically with the old Miracle Piano Teaching System which is now obsolete.
I have been working with the program for a few days now and I believe I am developing solid technique beyond my prior education. The initial setup was tricky (program loaded fine on Windows '98SE but I needed a MIDI in/out cable-to-USB to hook up my antiquated Kawai KC10 Spectra synthesizer in addition to having to download a driver for the cable hookup, although any modern keyboard should adapt just fine) but once I got rolling I found the program both intuitive and fun.
The software package comes with a 222 page manual that is simply loaded with valuable information on technique, music theory, improvisational methods, proper form and exercises, and a host of other information, as well as "Fifty Famous Feels"; a variety of samples of music in different styles one can playback and with which one can play along.
The program seems geared toward the adult learner who is intent on getting a grasp of the piano in an accelerated fashion, though a bright child with some keyboard skills could benefit as well.
From the beginning, the program sets out what is required of the student and provides ample exercises at increasingly difficult levels, along with a "Comp-u-Pare" facility that enables one to record the recital of exercises (with or without the accompanying backtrack/rhythm) and test her/his skills and abilities. In addition, the software features musical notation of the exercises, a visual/virtual "keyboard" that plays the exercise, text explanations of the lessons (mirrored in the manual), and videos that show how to play the exercises.
There is more (including MIDI interface tools which I have yet to explore) but I can safely say this is one of the best programs available if one wishes to apply the learning methods to gain a solid understanding of the keyboard at a self-paced level. The writer(s) of this program have clearly done their homework in presenting the student with a valuable tool for grasping musical knowledge best presented on the piano keyboard. However, the instruction seems to go beyond the stoic, stodgy feel of personal piano lessons and slow-paced tutorial softwares into the realm of developing the keyboard player as a MUSICIAN and gaining the "feel" of what it is like to control the instrument instead of letting it dictate your actions and feelings.
If you are serious about learning piano and music, I believe this is the most thorough approach on the market.
Mike G.

Ensoniq Asr 10 Review

Ensoniq Asr 10
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ah... the ASR-10. This was a pivotal sampling synthesizer back in the 90's when it was made. The technology behind this sampler still has musicians, engineers and songwriters still looking for some version of the ASR series (they made an ASR-10, ASR-10m rackmount, ASR-88 and ASR-X). It was a fully blown workstation sampler that gave you the ability to actually record a full song (vocals, effects and all) right out of the box. This machine had it all.
First and foremost it is a sampler. A 16 bit 40kHz sampler to be exact. While sample rates are at 24 bit and 192kHz these days back then 40kHz was the best to be had in samplers, and it's still full CD quality. On top of that you get a whole host of sample editing parameters like looping, crossfading, volume smoothing, time comp, and more. While that's nice and everything the editing really doesn't stop there. Keep in mind this is a sampling SYNTHESIZER. That means you have also all the benefits of having that sample be a wave form that you can edit with a host of parameters including LFO, two digital filters, three envelope generators, and 15 other modulation sources. Want a layered sound? No problem. The ASR-10 can layer up to eight samples together into a single patch.
Each of those patches you create with the samples can have some added juice with an integrated 24 bit effects processor. How many effects? Try 62 effects you can edit fully. These aren't just cheap reverbs and delays. These are the same effects found in the world class DP/4 and DP/2 effects processors. People are still raving about how lush the signal processing is. Choruses, flanges, multi-tap delays, speaker effects, distortion, reverb, phasers... you have it all in one unit.
I did say this is a workstation so you get a 16 track sequencer and 31 voice multi-timbral capabilities on the ASR-10. The sequencer is really easy to use and you can even sample while playing the sequencer. I used to work at a music store back when this baby was out and it was a HUGE seller in the hip hop music genre. While the Akai MPC series was a superior sequencer many artists prefer the sampling and synthesis of Ensoniq for their mixes. Some hip hop artists that used the ASR-10 in their recordings were Kanye West, Alchemist and Pharell Williams.
Remember when I said you can pretty much make your entire song with this one machine? Well you can, but it's tricky with the stock model (having only 2 MB of memory). Some of the "tricks" include things like sampling your vocals in pieces that can be keyed to cut down on sample time. You can also use the tape mode which makes the ASR-10 pretty much a two track digital recorder and record straight to memory or an external SCSI hard drive.
The stock ASR-10 didn't come with a lot of memory, but it can be upgraded to 16MB (I forget the specific kind, but it's was an industry standard a long time ago... check eBay for ASR memory). The stock unit also didn't come with the SCSI interface used for plugging in an external hard drive or Zip drive (100 and 250 MB capacity). I strongly recommend looking for that option as it greatly increases the ASR's capabilities. Other options include an eight output breakout box and digital out.
There is quite a sizable library out for the ASR-10. Many of the samples from that library have ended up in the Proteus X and Emulator X libraries. Again just check out eBay and you should find a ton of samples ready to go. Also you don't have to just settle for editing from the sampler's onboard LCD display. One good editing tool out there is Ensoniq MIDI/Disk Tools by Rubber Chicken Software. It makes sample editing a lot easier.
Does it all sound good? Well it's not. Remember this is a vintage sampler synthesizer. The thing has no internal storage space; which means you have to load the operating system and samples and sequences every time you turn on the machine. Just keep that in mind. If you are looking for a sweet hardware sampler with a ready made library of killer sounds then this may be a nice addition to your collection.

Casio CTK-5000-STAD 61-Key Digital Music Keyboard Review

Casio CTK-5000-STAD 61-Key Digital Music Keyboard
Average Reviews:

we just got this a few days ago, and are very happy with it. The sound is very realistic for piano, and the action feels good. We were using an older borrowed keyboard, and were pleasantly surprised at the playablility and sound quality.
we bought from JR, because at the time it was slightly cheaper than Amazon, even with shipping, but the price has gone up.
This keyboard came with a stand, probably a $20 value, which is a bonus. It shows it in the picture, but not in the product description. We just had to get a bench and we were set.
We've just started exploring the settings. The first we adjusted was the touch sensitivity, which makes it louder the harder (technically, the faster) you hit the key, like a real piano. It has 3 setting choices: off, 1, and 2, with 2 being most sensitive. On 2 there is a pretty wide range of volume with key stroke, from very quiet on up, mimicking a real piano; not just quiet and loud.
Its still new to us, but we are very pleased with what we got for the money.
