(More customer reviews)This is perhaps Poulenc's best song cycle. Though hardly a cycle in the poetic sense, Poulenc combines the poems of French Surrealist Paul Éluard to create one of art song's most Romantic cycles. Each song in this 9 song cycle is dependent of the rest of the songs to illustrate the horrors of WWII, the beauty of love and the magical juxtaposition of night and day. These songs rely on each other and as a result, must not be excerpted. Many of the songs are merely transitional songs to increase the significance of its following song. Poulenc shows his mastery of Éluard's poetry as he personifies the text within his music. It is very clear how Poulenc interpreted the poetry by how he creates the atmospheres and drama of the text. If for nothing else, this set must be purchased for the final song, Nous avons fait la nuit. The entire cycle builds momentum to the final song and when we get to the final song, the energy and momentum continue even beyond the gorgeous postlude into the future. A facile, sensitive pianist and a thoughtful tenor or baritone are required for this amazing piece of music.
