Music Games (Jewel Case) Review

Music Games (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

A colorful, fun program for beginning students, especially for piano students. Includes activities to practice your existing knowledge of names of the piano keys, note names on the treble and bass staff, C major and G major scales, melodic intervals, musical terms, and counting in 4/4 or 3/4 time. No music theory instruction is given - just practice what you already know. The packaging I saw recommended for ages 7+, which seems about right; students using this software will need to be able to read (the directions are not spoken). Very affordable!

Harmonic Vision Music Ace 2 - Consumer Version, Hybrid CD Review

Harmonic Vision Music Ace 2 - Consumer Version, Hybrid CD

Very well developed program for the young student of music. Can hook up your keyboard to your computer & work the lessons that way, or just use the keyboard, too. Teaches beginning tempo, rhythm, introduces the various concepts of all the differences in tempo, beat, etc. Teaches about the grand staff, also has a "doodle pad" where kids can make their own music & hear it played back to them. Lots of fun!

Music Ace Consumer Version, Hybrid CD-ROM Review

Music Ace Consumer Version, Hybrid CD-ROM
Average Reviews:

As a general Elementary Music Specialist, I used this program for years with kids as young as kindergarteners up to the Fifth grade. While the younger readers needed some occasional help, most kids who can "listen" and "click" can understand what to do. This is the perfect program to accompany music instruction for any kid. But even if it's all you have, it is amazingly fun, simple, and interesting that even Paula could do it!

Piano for Kids (Jewel Case) Review

Piano for Kids (Jewel Case)

This is a first-stage beginner's program with an excellent presentation. The cute characters provide a very good education about piano basics and how to play the piano. For the software version, screen animations provide a level of interest for kids. Recommended for age 6+, but I believe it could start younger for those that can read a little. The software version features printable sheet music, tempo adjustments, puzzles, games, and an option to download other free MIDI songs (but on Windows Vista with a broadband (cable internet) connection, this option did not work). SelectSoft/ArcMedia's website also did not produce a listing for free MIDI music downloads. If the download MIDI songs function works for you, this would be an excellent choice for long-term teaching. Piano for Kids (Jewel Case) Piano for Kids

Piano Wizard PREMIER Piano Instruction Software - USB/MIDI Review

Piano Wizard PREMIER Piano Instruction Software - USB/MIDI

Mine had an M-Audio Uno interface [...], which is a known dud. But I got my money back and moved on with a different one.
And the graphics are a bit back to the 80's. Very low resolution.
Otherwise not too bad - as a game. Although, I agree with other reviewers that it is only a game. It is no substitute for proper teaching, requires some guidance to learn something other than hacking around on the keyboard, and is not a sophisticated piano method.
But I found it a good way to get the kids practicing the piano in a playful way, without me always needing to be there.

I guess they misrepresented the product listed for the price listed. However, they rapidly credited my purchase so no harm no foul. The only reason I state one star is because I had to pick one. Since I didn't receive anything I couldn't really rate it.

Hohner Student Melodica, 32 Key Review

Hohner Student Melodica, 32 Key
Average Reviews:

In this price range you aren't going to find a better melodica. Great instrument to learn on or to have around to add spice to your home recordings. It doesn't come with any instructions, but all you do is insert one of the two included mouth pieces. One is short, one is long. With the short one you hold the instrument with one hand (slide your hand under the strap) and play with the other. With the long bendy straw mouthpiece you can set the melodica on a table and play it like a small keyboard. Good sound and easy to play. Have fun.

EarMaster 5 Review

EarMaster 5
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love this software. I'm a pretty crappy guitarist who decided to go back to the basics and learn some music theory (which I'm doing via the "absolutely understand guitar" DVD set by Scotty West -- I recommend that product as well -- the presenter has a tendency to ramble and excessively repeat himself but ultimately the material is solid and a lot of things are starting to click so it was worth hanging in there). Anyway, this software is a perfect complement to your music theory studies. I think that unless you're just lucky to be born with a natural talent, you're going to need some dictation of intervals, chords, scales, and rhythm to atune your ear to how they sound. Playing it on your own instrument isn't as effective because you can't help using your eyes and fingers as a crutch. With this software, you have nothing but your ears to find the answer.
Some small nits to pick, which I'm writing here hoping that emedia will read this and include in its next upgrade: (1) the sounds are pretty crappy and hardly like the instruments they're supposed to represent. I'd rather get a choice of three instruments (say, piano, violin and steel string acoustic guitar) that sound realistic than 60+ crappy MIDI ones. (2) I wish an exercise were included that helps you train absolute pitch. For this, I think the Deburgh method is good. It starts by playing two notes (Eb and F#) and you have to listen in to the character of each and once you can distinguish them you progress to other/additional notes. (3) Another thing that I would find extremely useful is if the scale identification (which is what I'm working on now) could be expanded beyond ascending/descending. My hunch is that a program could be written to pick out notes from a scale in a sequence that still sounds relatively musical (following some musical rules). Or alternatively, plenty of examples (a couple of hundred, so you can't rely on memory) could be stored of existing music pieces in those scales. Ultimately, I would like to be able to hear something on the radio and be able to pick up by the character of the music that it's in this or that scale/mode (even if I can't tell the pitch) and the included exercise (just ascending/descending) is a bit too easy.
